Samtskhe – Javakheti
Route: Tbilisi – Foka – Vardzia – Sapara – Akhaltsikhe – Abastumani – Borjomi – Tbilisi
Day 1: In the morning you will drive to Javakheti to visit Foka monastery – is built in 11-th century and situated on the territory near the lake Paravani 2073 meters up from the sea level. The Georgian nuns still continue their activity.
Here you will see Lake Paravani it is natural lake at 2073 meters up from the sea level. Then drive to Khertvisi fortress -. built on the high rock at a confluence of the river Paravani and Mtkvari. In IV century BC. It is one of the largest and well preserved fortress of our country.
Near of Khertvisi is Vardzia – the most popular place in the valley. Cave monastery complex built in second half of XII century, during the reign of King George III and King Tamar. There are up to 300 caves distributed on eight levels. In main church of Vardzia original frescoes of XII century are still preserved.
Drive to Akhaltsikhe;

Day 2: breakfast at the guest house
Drive to Sapara monastery – It has existed from the 9th century, and has numbered among its monks many important figures in Georgian ecclesiastical history. From the end of the 16th century until the beginning of the 17th century the Sapara Monastery became empty due to the expansion of Turkish policy into Samtskhe and during this process the monastery’s icons and other treasures were taken to more protected areas of Georgia.
Drive back to Akhaltsikhe to visit Rabati castle – Rare examples of Darbazi (traditional Georgian houses) cluster around the castle, which was built in the 12th century and houses a mosque from 1752 and the ruins of a medrese (Islamic school). The Rabati also has a synagogue, an Armenian church and a Catholic church, shops, restaurant, main tower, small pools, fountains and fantastic views for taking photos.
After lunch you will visit Zarzma monastery – It is a complex of a series of buildings dominated by a domed church, belfry and several single vaulted chapels. Some of them are ruined. Monk cells and refectories have not survived. According to some sources, there was a tunnel leading to the river which is by now filled with boulders.
In nice weather you will stop in Abastumani – at night you will visit Astrophysical Observatory and you will have opportunity to see Galaxy via telescope.
Dinner and accommodation at the guest house.
Day 3: breakfast at the guest house;
After breakfast drive to Borjomi and visit Green monastery and you will have opportunity to drink well known Borjomi from natural spring.
Drive back to Tbilisi
On the way you will have lunch;

In the evening farewell dinner at the traditional Georgian restaurant with Georgian folklore.
